Melnik

Famous as the smallest town in Bulgaria, with a population of just 385, Melnik is situated a 90 minute drive south, just north of the Greek border.  It is a beautiful, historic place, with 96 of its buildings designated as cultural monuments.  The town is surrounded by impressive natural sandstone pyramids.  The town has also been famous for producing a strong wine since at least 1346, reportedly a favourite of Winston Churchill's.
